An Australian judge has caved to Djokovic. The country’s immigration minister still has the authority to overrule the judge and restore sanity.
Public health policy must be guided by science. Science evolves and advances. You know what you know when you know it. And you act on what you know when you know it. Then you learn more. Then facts (and variants) change and you adjust. COVID is a moving target. I have no problem with changing guidelines and recommendations. That’s the way this is supposed to work. But ultimately science-based public health policy is only as effective as it is accurately and understandably communicated to the public. The CDC has failed, particularly since the emergence of Omicron. Here’s where the knowledge and policy chain breaks. None of the current guidelines make any sense without accurate and universally available testing. The guidelines are illogical, confusing, contradictory and incomprehensible.
I’m a personal fan of Rochelle Walensky, and her resume as a medical research professional is unassailable. But she has failed as a communicator, and her job, ultimately, is to communicate.
She has to go. Preferably by the end of the week.
We are at a crossroads. We cannot afford (another) wrong turn.
