I’m pulling for Eric Bieniemy, and I’m hoping his move from Kansas City to D.C. as the Commanders offensive coordinator and assistant head coach will lead to him becoming an NFL head coach. Bieniemy will be in complete charge of the Washington offense and will call the plays. He was not the primary play caller during his five seasons as the Chiefs’ O.C. under head coach and play-caller extraordinaire Andy Reid.
Bieniemy has had numerous head coaching interviews over the past four years, but has been passed over each time, most recently by the Colts just a week ago. It’s easy to attribute this pattern to systemic racial bias, but in this case I’m not sure it explains it. This just doesn’t add up. But I do hope that getting out of Reid’s shadow will soon move Bieniemy into a head coaching spotlight.
Bieniemy has signed a two-year contract in Washington. This will be a pivotal season for the Commanders and head coach Ron Rivera, who enters his fourth year in Washington with a record of 22-27-1. If he doesn’t make the playoffs in 2023, he’s gone, particularly since a sale of that franchise appears imminent.
