Like you, I’m sure, I am extremely saddened by the death of Colin Powell. He was a truly great American.
He was also a great Republican. And a proud one. And a real one. He was nothing like the Republicans In Name Only who go around calling actual Republicans “RINOs.”
Colin Powell believed in the rule of law. He believed in truth. He believed in facts. He believed in evidence. He believed in honor and integrity. He believed in keeping promises and agreements. His Republicanism was deep, but he never placed party above country.
His fealty was to the Constitution, not to an autocrat. He was firm and resolute, but never shrill.
He rejected lies and liars.
He believed in democracy, and its preservation. He sought a better America for all Americans, not just some.
He knew that kindness and compassion are not weakness.
I mourn the passing of a great American and a great Republican.
And I mourn the passing of the Republican Party.
