Iranian soccer players have displayed real courage. American players displayed genuine respect and empathy. Yes. The arc of history bends toward progress and justice. I choose to be hopeful.
Increasingly, the Iranian people seem to be rejecting autocracy. But it also looks like a growing number of American people and juries are rejecting fascism falsely parading as patriotism. “Seditious conspiracy.” Guilty. Seditious conspiracy. That means plotting to overthrow the government of the United States. Guilty. Once again, I choose to be hopeful.
The Respect for Marriage Act has passed the Senate. The House is expected to pass it next week and it will then be signed into law. We will then have legislative protection for same-sex and interracial marriage. While in many ways it’s sad that we even need this measure, but we do. The next threat to equality and decency is the Supreme Court of the United States. That’s sad, too.
And still I choose to remain hopeful.
Little victories can change the world.
