It’s clear.

The only folks who don’t see it are the folks who don’t want to see it, because they don’t like their own cowardly image in the mirror. They don’t want to see it because they lack the courage, integrity and historical perspective to see it.

That’s their problem. I will not be deterred, sidetracked or derailed. Nor will any other American who truly loves this country and its profound foundational concepts and principles.

January 6, 2021 was the darkest, most threatening and treacherous day in American history.

Cue the Mindless Bluster Section. “You must be kidding!”

No. You must be an ostrich. You must be an ostrich with a smaller head than your average ostrich, buried deeper in the sand (or somewhere) than your average ostrich.

Facts. The armed insurrection at our Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 was a pre-meditated, coordinated, cynical, illegal attempt to simply throw out the results of a free and fair election. Domestic terrorists, manipulated by the then president of the United States, attempted to overthrow the government of the United States. It was an attempted coup that came perilously close to succeeding.

It was an attempt to install an autocracy.

The rioters wanted to kill the vice president of the United States, and the speaker of the House of Representatives. People were killed.

The then president of the United States incited this riot. He actually launched the Big Lie months before the November election.  The rioters were his Cultists. There were no “false flags.” These were Trumpists, rioting in the name of Trumpism.

The then president of the United States parked himself in front of a tv and watched the riot he incited as if it were the Super Bowl. Despite pleas from advisors and even family members to stop the violence (which he clearly had the ability to do), he waited three hours and seven minutes before he did or said anything.

And then he told the rioters, “We love you.”

That’s not only a violation of his oath of office, that’s treason. No? Then what would be?

Not our darkest day? Then what was?

This was not spontaneous. This was highly pre-meditated, planned and coordinated. Where’s the evidence? Everywhere. It’s documented. It’s all there. Emails. Memos. Texts. Videos and audio tapes. Hard evidence, as opposed to the “no evidence needed” policy that fuels the Cultists’ lies.

And now clearly with the foreknowledge and complicity of Trump State Television, aka Fox Fiction.

“Just do it.” Just throw out the election results. Just don’t certify them. Just prevent the first peaceful transfer of power in American history.

They’ve really all admitted it. Their hubris will be their ruination.

Watergate? This makes Watergate look like a jaywalking ticket.

And it doesn’t end there. When the attempted coup ultimately failed, the conspirators went after election officials in multiple states. Lives were threatened. The threats were not empty.

The Big Lie gave rise to and supported all the other lies.

And the lies have set the stage for future coup attempts. The last one failed. The next one might not.

January 6, 2021 was an armed insurrection carried out by domestic terrorists. The insurrection’s objective was to simply overturn the results of a free and fair election, prevent the peaceful transfer of power for the first time in American history, overthrow the government of the United States and install an autocracy.

Not the darkest day in American history? Really?

Sure, we’ve had plenty of other dark days, and I’m not diminishing any of them. No need to call the roll.

But they all involved others attacking us.

This was us on us, trying to overthrow us. This was us, trying to destroy our own sacred institutions.

That’s not just dark. That’s a goddam eclipse.

Paul's Bio

I clearly have the attention span of your median fruit fly.Look! Airplane!

Sorry. I’m back.

It’s both a curse and a blessing. I’ve never bought this stuff about, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” But I do think that a wide range of life experiences helps us grow as people, and helps us better relate to other people. I’ve been fortunate. And I am beyond grateful.

I show up on time. I go like hell. I’m a good listener. I hold myself accountable. I own my mistakes. And I have a natural and an insatiable curiosity. I’m never afraid to say, “I don’t know,” when I don’t. But then I try to find out.

The flip side is I’m a lousy ballroom dancer and my clothes sometimes fit me funny.

Stuff matters to me. I care. But while I take that stuff seriously, I try hard to never take myself seriously. As a result, I have sometimes been told, “Paul, it’s hard to tell when you’re serious and when you’re just having some fun. Which is it? Serious or fun?”

My answer is “yes.” But I think that is a legitimate criticism. I promise I’m going to work on that.

This has been the quickest and strangest half-century I’ve ever experienced. During that period, I’ve been afforded amazing opportunities in news and sports journalism across all platforms. I have taught wonderful students at the high school and collegiate level. Always, I learned more from them than they did from me. I’ve been a high school administrator. I spent ten seasons as a high school varsity football coach. I’ve been an advertising executive. I’ve hosted nationally syndicated television entertainment shows. In maybe the biggest honor I ever received, I was selected by NASA to be “Chet The Astronaut” for the “Land The Shuttle” simulator at Space Center Houston. (All I can say there, is “Do as I say, not as I do.” I put that thing in the Everglades more often than not.) Most recently, I just wrapped up a decade as a television news director, during which time our teams distinguished themselves in holding the powerful accountable, achieving both critical and ratings success.

What does all that mean? It means I am profoundly grateful. It also means I’m ready for “next.” So here we are. Radically Rational. It’s an idea I woke up with in 2017. I scribbled “Radically Rational” on a piece of notebook paper and used a magnet to stick it on our refrigerator. I saw it every day, and it just would not leave me alone.

I am second in charge at Radically Rational, LLC. My wife, Jo (also known as BB), is the president. Clearly, I have failed in my attempt to sleep my way to the top of this organization.

I hope you will learn that I’m loyal as a Labrador. But I will admit that this doggie can bite every now and then. My promise to you? I will show up on time. I will go like hell. I will listen to you earnestly and attentively. I will hold myself accountable. I will never be the least bit hesitant to say, “I don’t know,” when I don’t.

But then I’ll try to find out. Let’s do it.
